Looking for a gift with a story behind it? This Kaleidoscope Spin basket plate in green, purple and gold swirls was hand woven in Panama's Darién rainforest. Its purple, gold and blue swirls spin from a cream star, all held within a green band. Set it on a plate stand, a shelf or a tabletop where its colors can be seen.

Plates like this one are woven by Wounaan and Emberá women in the Darién rainforest of Panama, a skill handed down from mothers and grandmothers to daughters. Fine strands of chunga palm, colored with natural dyes from rainforest plants and earth, are coiled tightly around a core of naguala fiber, stitch by stitch, from a small knot at the center out to the rim. Every plate is woven entirely by hand, so each one is truly one of a kind.

Founded in 1991, TraderBrock celebrates the handcraft of Latin America's indigenous peoples. We work with Guna, Wounaan and Emberá artisans we know by name, and all profits go back into their communities for education, tools and the teaching of ancestral techniques.

Creating a Basket

The fibers are harvested, cleaned, dyed using natural sources, and then woven into intricate patterns using coiling and twill-weaving techniques. The baskets are constructed by forming a base and then
creating walls, resulting in a functional and beautiful art piece. The tightness of the weave and the complexity of the design demonstrate the artisan's expertise
