Folks, here's another primitive cocobolo wood carving. It is an interesting piece for several reasons. First, it is old and was hewed out with simple tools. Secondly, it is a piece of cocobolo wood that displays the blond touches that cocobolo has. I understand these blond areas come from the outer part of the wood. Close to the bark is what they told me. My bet is this was made as a toy for a youngster.
These wood carvings are done by the artists of the Wounaan or Ebera tribes who live in the rainforests of Panama. This particularly carving has been in my inventory for 25 years. I recently opened a box of old carvings and decided to share them with the world. This carving is 5.5" tall and the base measures 2.5" x 2". So if old or vintage wood carvings of Frigate birds is your thing... here's a good bet.
