These tagua vase carvings are relatively new to the Panama tagua market. It is interesting how it developed. You see, the Wounaan tagua carvers are the husbands and brothers to the Wounaan basket artists. So what happened is the tagua carvers started carving out the vases and then making the etched design look very much like the designs their wives and sisters used on their baskets. It worked because the vases have become popular with collectors. My wife has a cabinet full.
Here’s a vase done by a youngster just learning the art. His dad helps him and so does mom. She helps with the design. The kid has a great future in the tagua carving business.
Every tagua carving is a one-of-a-kind treasure.
