Vintage Hand-Woven Home Decor Plate Basket

This is one of our earliest plate baskets. It was made in a village called Sambu deep in the Darien jungle near Colombia. The fiber comes from a palm and the artists call it chunga. The dyes are all natural. Plate baskets are usually used to decorate walls.

ARTISAN MADE: by Panamanian indigenous artisans using passed Plate Basket weaving techniques that are rooted deep in Embera and Wounaan traditions. Created by hand, demonstrating the unique skill of the Panama artisan community, and supporting one-of-a-kind pieces in a world homogenized by mass production.

FAIR TRADE & MADE IN PANAMA: Made under safe working conditions and fair income. MolaMagic provides equitable trade opportunities, Job development skill training and promoting responsible production in the Panamanian economy. Our Vintage woven Plate Baskets are proudly made in Panama.

THE PLATE BASKET STORY: The Wounaan and Embera people from the rainforest in Darien province of Panama are master artisans. The Plate Baskets are hand woven using natural fibers found in the forest. A variety of reeds and palm fibers are normally used. Chunga, the fiber of the black palm, is the fiber of choice among the weavers. The colors are produced with natural extracts of plants and earth, using the traditional methods for dyeing Plate Basket fibers. Seldom, if ever, are two Plate Baskets alike. The original designs usually portray life in the village, local animals and insects, or plant life. Income earned from the sale of these lovely Plate Baskets reduces the need to destroy the rainforest

WOMENFOUNDED:MolaMagic was envisioned by Janet Marie Brockman with the mission to empower the Indigenous Women of Color of Panama by helping them reach a global market for their handmade products. For the past twenty years all sales revenues have been reinvested into the artisan community of Panama. This includes education, medical care, land purchase, tools, and other needs.
