Wounaan Indian Basket from Panama #3031
This is another unusual basket. There was a time when the village of Puerta Lada was the only village I knew that made baskets like this. It is unusual because the fiber is wrapped in a special plastic and then the basket is painstakenly stitched together. I don't believe Puerta Lada, or any village is still making them. The degree of difficulty and the time it took is why the artists gave it up. This is a good one for the serious basket collector. It is 5" tall and has a 23" circumference. The strap is 34" long so it will hang at 17".
