rainforest-vintage-basket-1
Vintage Chocolate Cascade Cream and Brown Banded Rainforest Basket

Here is a vintage find for anyone who loves Panama's rainforest: this Chocolate Cascade basket in cream and brown bands and blocks, woven by hand from chunga palm. The jar shaped body wears a dark brown belt with offset brown blocks above and below on soft cream. It makes a thoughtful gift for collectors of handmade art and anyone who loves the rainforest. Keep small treasures inside, or let it stand on a shelf or table as a piece of art.

Baskets like this one are woven by Wounaan and Emberá women in the Darién rainforest of Panama, a skill handed down from mothers and grandmothers to daughters. Fine strands of chunga palm, colored with natural dyes from rainforest plants and earth, are coiled tightly around a core of naguala fiber, stitch by stitch, from the center of the base up to the rim. Every basket is woven entirely by hand, so each one is truly one of a kind.

Founded in 1991, TraderBrock celebrates the handcraft of Latin America's indigenous peoples.
